Tips for High Quality Photos

Tips for High Quality Photos

From your team at the Rumjahn Gallery

PART 1: Smartphones

Phones are continuously evolving to capture higher quality photos. We love seeing candid moments taken on a whim, vacation excursions and many other fun things a phone often captures.

That being said, there are a couple ways to ensure a higher quality photo so that we can provide the greatest result for all your printing needs. Rumjahn provides a variety of printing services such as scanning, cropping, color correcting, editing and resizing images. Having a high quality photo will allow our team to work quickly and efficiently to provide you with the finest photos possible.

iPhone’s are now able to take incredibly clear images. Here are a few tips to ensure that an iPhone image maintains the highest professional-level quality possible.

  • Take images in as much natural light as possible to avoid using flash which can often give less than ideal results

  • Burst mode can sometimes be helpful to take a series of images that can later be reviewed for the most in-focus image in the burst.

  • Take time to focus the camera if you are able to (often by tapping on the screen)

  • Take images in HDR mode unless capturing fast movement

  • Allow images taken to save as jpegs vs. heic through your settings

  • If saving or sending an image, save at the largest file possible

  • Download an image rather than screenshotting (this will immediately compress a file)

PART 2: Physical Cameras

Using a phone to take everyday images is often much easier than carrying around a camera. However, a physical camera can almost always provide you with a high quality image. Here are some tips to follow when taking images with a DSLR and other physical cameras.

  • Adjust your camera settings to work with the light your are shooting in. Most cameras will allow you to change between shooting in daylight, tungsten light, fluorescent, etc.

  • Play around with Manual settings over Automatic modes. Automatic can sometimes hinder the choices available to you on the camera. With Manual it can be easier to adjust every little detail to accommodate the surroundings you are shooting in and will give your more creative freedom.

  • Higher ISOs are best used in lower light, while lower ISOs are better for brighter settings. However, sometimes setting your camera to a higher ISO can make the image grainy. Try also adjusting the Aperture and Shutter Speed. If the shutter speed is slow, take a stand! (Literally)! Using a stand can keep your camera steady for when you need to keep the shutter open for long periods of time (Great for time lapse images and at night).

  • Keep your light meter at 0. The light meter tells you that at 0 you have enough light to capture the image. Adjusting the meter too high (in the positives) can overexpose your image and too low (in the negatives) can underexpose a photo.

  • Keep your photo in focus but play around with depth of field (you can do this by adjusting your aperture).

  • Take lots of photos of what you are capturing to have a variety to choose the best from.

  • Shooting in sRGB is often the best color setting

  • Shooting AWB (Auto White Balance) is often the most common white balance to shoot in

  • Shoot in RAW. Shooting in RAW saves the most information possible for your images and can allow you to compress later post edit. Shooting in jpeg will automatically compress to save space and will delete some information that can make keeping the quality of your image and editing easier

  • When saving files, keep the PPI at 300 or higher
